LUXURY SHOCKOE SLIP LOFTS
The Davenport at The Watkins was originally built in 1920 as a warehouse, typical of the industrial architecture of Shockoe Slip. For almost 30 years, it housed grocer The Gary Grocery Company. For almost a half century, it has featured residential lofts among the upper floors and street level businesses and restaurants, including seafood restaurant The Hard Shell, voted Richmond’s Best several times since opening in 1995. The area is popular with the city’s creative class, with award-winning advertising agency Martin calling it home, and many of Richmond’s professionals, including law firms, architects, and more enjoying its proximity to the nearby business and government districts and a lively mix of eateries and entertainment spots.

historic shockoe
Shockoe Slip is noted for its distinctive cobblestone streets, paved with “Belgian Block.” The uneven surface helped draft horses navigate the steep hill from Richmond’s docks to the warehouses and industries that lined Cary Street. Beginning early in the 20th century, many of these building were renovated to accommodate the professionals that found the neighborhood desirable, and lofts and apartments that provided quick access to the city’s government and the entertainment venues and restaurants that flourished in the Slip and nearby Shockoe Bottom. Today, it still boasts a lively mix of professionals and restaurants, and outdoor recreation is just south along the James River.
